Comments: As one of the most prolific composers of the 20th Century, Johnny Almeida created a legacy of over 200 Mele hula. Today he is fondly remembered as "The Dean Of Hawaiian Music". Although he was blind from age 10, he mastered the mandolin, 'ukulele, guitar, steel guitar, violin, banjo, bass, saxophone, and piano. His formal education ended after the sixth grade, but he was fluent in two languages, and taught music most of his adult life. He could not read or write, but shared the poetry of over 200 Hawaiian Language compositions. Generations have since sung his mele and danced the hula to them. He was a gifted prodigy who must be credited as a major factor in the history of Hawaiian Music. This album is presented as an overview of some of Johnny Kameaaloha Almeida's most memorable performances.

The extensive liner notes are lovingly transcribed and translated by the tireless efforts of Keola Donaghy of Hale Kuamo'o, the Hawaiian Language Center Of Ka Haku`ula O Ke'elikolani College of the Hawaiian language at the University of Hawai'i at Hilo.

Enjoy!!
