Mark Keal'i Ho'omalu was born and raised in Aeia, Oahu. At the age of 15, he started his hula career with Darrell Lupenui, Thaddius Wilson, O'Brien Eselu and John Ka'imikaua.

He has been kumu hula (hula teacher) of Na Mele Hula 'Ohana from Oakland, CA. for the past 10 years.

Participating in the 1999 Merrie Monarch Festival, he mesmerized the audience with his innovative, mystical chant style and unique style of hula - Kupa'a'aihula.

Reviews:

While the majority of these selections feature vocals and ipu accompaniment, some have been enhanced with string and guitar work. This album has been #1 in the charts in the islands for the last 3 weeks!! 4/15/99

Inventive yet familiar; peculiar yet intriguing; dignified yet unrestrained; bizarre to the senses, yet intense to the soul. Mark Keali`i Ho'omalu, the kumu hula of Na Mele 'Ohana of Oakland Ca, has caught the islands by storm with his bold unique treatment of Hawaiian literary performance. Whether its wowing the audiences in Hawai'i or across the sea in Maleka(America), Ho'omalu's inspired style of self-expression and cultural interpretation has roots in tradition... from the liner notes by Manu Boyd.
